Montalegre is a village in the district of Vila Real, northern region and sub-region of Alto Trás-os-Montes, with about 1800 inhabitants. It is the seat of a border municipality with 805.46 km2 in area and 10 537 inhabitants (2002), subdivided into 25 parishes. The municipality is bordered to the north by Spain (Loibos, Muiños, Calvos de Randín, Baltar, Cualedro and Oimbra), to the east by Chaves, to the southeast by Boticas, to the south by Cabeceiras ed Basto, to the southwest by Vieira do Minho and to the west by Terras de Bouro. The municipality of Montalegre is, with Boticas, one of the two municipalities of Barroso. A little more than 26.25% of the area of the county is part of the Peneda-Gêres National Park, and the municipalities that comprise it contribute the largest area to the Park (21174ha). Famous for its smokehouse and the mythical Friday the 13th festival, Montalegre is today a cultural destination of excellence.
